1. Arriving: airports and ports
Most visitors to western Crete land at Chania Airport (CHQ) or arrive by overnight ferry at Souda port. Some flights only serve Heraklion (HER), which is 2 hours 15 minutes from Chania. In all three cases the smoothest option is a pre-booked private transfer: your driver waits with a name sign, helps with luggage and drives straight to your hotel or villa — no queue, no metered surprises.

3. Buses, rental cars, taxis or private transfers?
Public buses (KTEL) are cheap and reliable between the main north-coast towns, but they rarely reach villas, and beaches like Balos or Elafonissi have only one or two departures a day. Rental cars give freedom, but add parking, fuel, insurance excess and the stress of single-lane mountain roads. Taxis work for short hops in town. Private transfers and day tours are the middle ground for families and groups: a fixed price agreed in advance, one vehicle for up to 16 people, child seats, and a driver who knows where to stop.
4. Planning your excursion days
A comfortable week in western Crete usually means three or four excursion days: one beach day west (Elafonissi or Falassarna), one boat-and-lagoon day (Balos and Gramvousa), one hiking day (Samaria Gorge, with drop-off at Omalos and pick-up in Chora Sfakion), and one culture day (Knossos and Heraklion). Everything else — old town dinners, wineries, a sunset drive — fits into hourly hire.
